Ethos and services

Good relationships are essential for a successful project. John listens to clients and works closely with them to help them create the environments they would like to live and work in.

John’s practice is intentionally small to ensure he is fully involved in all aspects of a project. The benefit for clients is that this allows him to concentrate on what he does best – transforming a client’s brief into a fantastic and practical building. His friendly, inclusive, can do attitude focuses the applied collaborative effort of the design and construction teams on the client’s project needs.

John’s holistic approach, with an eye always on sustainability, considers landscape, context, function, budget and timescale to create projects that delight. His eco-minimalist approach puts consideration of the building fabric first, employing passive design techniques to minimise active mechanical systems. No extra capital cost is required to achieve high quality, uplifting designs with reduced running costs and carbon emissions.

Much of John’s work is gained by word of mouth. Extracts from some testimonials are below. Get in touch for full copies or contact details to speak to a previous client.

TESTIMONIALS

We wish to express or great appreciation, and sincere gratitude, to you for all your work creating this amazing house for us. From the start when you listened so carefully to our ideas, and all the way through the build, you were always a steadying hand and a guiding force, moulding our dreams into reality.

You have brought into being a very beautiful and comfortable home that is an absolute delight to live in. There is pleasure in both its functionality and its playfulness. Many of its features elicit “wows” from friends and family; the inglenook, the “dungeon”, the stone walled “library corridor”, the huge stone arched window, the “snug” and more!

Passersby stop to tell us how much they like it; some ask if it is a restoration as it fits in so well. Neighbours say it is the most “authentically Moffat” new house for years. More than one visitor has declared it to be “the best modern house they have ever been in.” We can simply add that it is everything we could have wished for and more. We are loving living here and relish every day. Thank you from the depth of our hearts,

Alan and Lucy - Greenstone

Katrina and I would like to place on record our sincere thanks for all the work you have done for us in relation to our cottage in Moniaive.

From our very first meeting when we discussed our requirements to the day we received the keys back from the builder, we have found your dealings with us to be fair and honest, your advice sound and measured and projected time scales for the different stages of the work realistic. We have found you to be thoroughly professional and very knowledgeable in relation to the many aspects of the work required and we have a garden / dining room which is exactly what we envisaged.

You have guided us with best intent at all times and listened to our comments and thoughts with much patience and, where possible, incorporated them into the final product. The new section of the house blends perfectly into the older part where you also carried out your work with sympathy to the age and character of the original cottage.

Once again, many thanks for all your hard work,

Katrina and Stuart – Barons Craig
